Round Rock approves CDBG funding plan for housing assistance, local non-profits

The Round Rock City Council approved a funding plan for low-income housing assistance and local non-profits at the regularly scheduled July 11 meeting.

The funding is provided through the City’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); these funds can be used for a wide range of housing, community and economic development activities and services, primarily for low- to moderate-income households. The City expects to receive $642,233 in the coming year for CDBG activities.

The one-year action plan approved by the Council for Oct. 1, 2024 through Sept. 30, 2025 includes funding for:

  • Home Repair program: $177,453
  • Greenhill Park Improvements: $240,000
  • Opportunities Williamson-Burnet Counties (OWBC) Meals on Wheels Program: $16,334
  • Round Rock Area Serving Center (RRASC) Housing Assistance: $30,000
  • Round Rock Area Serving Center (RRASC) Food Pantry: $30,000
  • Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Child Advocacy: $20,000
  • Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program Administration: $128,446

Last year, the Community Development Block Grant led to these developments in the City of Round Rock:

  • Construction of new sidewalks in the Chisholm Valley Neighborhood
  • Purchase and installation of an ADA playground at Frontier Park
  • Rehabilitation of homes for low to moderate income residents
  • Funding for non-profits that provide much needed public services to the community
  • Purchase and installation of 7 bus shelters in low to moderate income areas

Council also passed the City’s five-year Consolidated Plan for 2024-2028. The Consolidated Plan is designed to help states and local jurisdictions assess their affordable housing and community development needs and market conditions, and to make data-driven, place-based investment decisions. The City gathered the needs of residents through meetings and a community needs survey; based on this feedback, the top three priorities include housing needs, public service/ community service needs and infrastructure and neighborhood improvement needs.
