About Round Rock

The City of Round Rock, incorporated in 1913, is located 15 miles north of Austin and primarily located in Williamson County, with portions extending into Travis County. Round Rock currently occupies 38 square miles, and as of October 1, 2024, serves a population of approximately 136,000 within the city limits. More information can be found on our About Round Rock page.

Round Rock Government

The City of Round Rock is governed through a Council-Manager form of government in accordance with the Home Rule Charter adopted by voters in August 1977. The City Council is composed of a mayor and six council members, elected at-large to serve the entire city, rather than by geographical area. The Mayor and Council Members serve staggered three-year terms, with elections held the first Saturday in May. The Mayor and six Council members, acting as the elected representatives of the citizens of Round Rock, formulate public policy to meet community needs and assure orderly development in the City. The City Council appoints the City Manager, City Attorney, Municipal Court Judge and various citizen boards and commissions. The City Council’s public policy activities include: adopting the City’s annual budget and establishing general objectives; reviewing and adopting all ordinances and resolutions; and approving purchases and contracts as prescribed by City Charter and State Law.

The City Manager’s Office handles the general administration of the City and executes the policies and objectives of the City Council. The City Manager is directly responsible to the Mayor and City Council and oversees the day-to-day operation of the City by coordinating all City Department activities and functions, including the development of the Strategic Plan.
