The Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with local nonprofit, Cerebral Palsy Awareness Transition Hope (CPATH), to create Central Texas’ first ever competitive power soccer team, The Green Machines.

The newly founded team held their first scrimmage on Sept. 25 against the San Antonio STRAPS Scorpions and are scheduled to host multiple practices and games throughout the remainder of 2021.

Power soccer is the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users. Participants include persons with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, stroke, spinal cord injury and other disabilities. The game is played in a gymnasium on a regulation basketball court. Two teams of four players attack, defend, and spin-kick a 13-inch soccer ball in a skilled and challenging game similar to able-bodied soccer.

Interested in joining The Green Machines or know someone who might be? Registration is currently open to players that are at least 5 years old, able to safely follow directions and possess the ability to handle their power wheelchair independently.

In addition to power soccer, Round Rock Parks and Recreation offers a variety of adaptive and inclusive programming providing opportunities for youth, teens and adults with disabilities to acquire skills that enable them to participate in leisure experiences and enhance their involvement in community programs.
