 Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)

As of November 2013, the City of Round Rock has over 29,500 automatic meters installed throughout the City.  This equates to over 96% of the City's meters replaced!  All residential meters have been changed out, with mainly commercial areas left to replace.  The plan is to continue to update all water meters in Round Rock to this new technology over the remainder of this year.  All of the City's water meters should be replaced with a new AMR by the end of 2013.

Currently, the new meters are read wirelessly by a truck driving through each neighborhood with the meters installed.  This is called a "drive-by" system.  Ultimately, a fixed network will be put in place so the meters will be able to be read at any time without the need for a truck to be in the immediate area.  Readings will be taken from water meters every hour and sent to a data collection server.

This technology allows the City to read meters quickly and accurately and reduce the number of staff necessary to track water usage throughout Round Rock.  It will also allow our customers to take more control and initiative with their water use, by being able see their water use in nearly real-time, receive alerts for potential leaks, and set threshold alerts when usage reaches a specific gallon amount used.
