The City of Round Rock was an early adopter of social media as a way to connect with citizens and others interested in the City. The City uses blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube to enhance our communication efforts.
Community Conversations is the City of Round Rock's blog site. Launched in July 2007, it features 14 blogs, the most active of which are Decision Points, which covers prominent issues being considered by the City Council, Reader's Exchange, a fantastic review of books and much more by Linda Sappenfield of the Library staff, and Special Events from Parks and Recreation.
The City of Round Rock launched a Twitter account, @roundrocknews, in June 2008. Give it a follow if you want to keep with the lastest news from the City. Feel to free to ask questions or comment on what we're doing there.
The City's Facebook Page debuted in July 2008. It's a great place to comment on blog posts and video content, and share your thoughts on what's going on in Round Rock.
The unsung hero of our social media tools has got to be our Flickr group. It's a fantastic repository of great pictures of Round Rock's people and places. Have a look around and see if you don't agree Round Rock is home to many, many talented photographers.
Our online video presence is fed by YouTube. The City's monthly newsmagazine, City Focus, can be accessed there, as well as other videos like our Preservation Minute series highlighting historic preservation.
In 2011, the City started experimenting with Google+ If you are active on Google+, Circle the City of Round Rock to get news and information from us.
Social media goals
Our social media goals are:
- Provide additional channels of input for citizens and other potentially-affected interests
- Increase the transparency of the City's decision-making process
- Facilitate a sense of community
- Reach new audiences with City messages and information.
The Rocky award
The Rocky is an award we bestow on those who promote Round Rock -- sometimes unwittingly -- on the web.
We created it as a way to recognize those who pull for the underdog -- yeah, even though we're 100,000-plus population, winnner of countless awards and accolades, we still think of ourself as the little guy.
