Round Rock ranks among safest Cities in U.S.
Round Rock ranks No. 2 safest among Texas cities greater than 100,000 population, No. 11 in nation

88 percent of Round Rock residents say they feel safe walking alone in their neighborhood at night.CQ Press has released City Crime Rankings 2011-2012, and Round Rock ranks 11th among U.S. cities 100,000 population or greater.

Round Rock is No. 2 among the 32 Texas cities population 100,000 or greater included in the rankings.

“Very few fast-growth communities can maintain such high rankings year after year,” Mayor Alan McGraw said. “Our continued presence on this list reflects the City’s continued emphasis on public safety and the commitment and proficiency of our law officers. Our citizens also deserve recognition for their support and proactive involvement in keeping Round Rock safe.”

The crime rate rankings of the cities and metropolitan areas are calculated using six crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. Round Rock ranked No. 29 overall in this year’s survey, which includes cities with at least 75,000 population.

Said City Manager Steve Norwood: “Round Rock’s Police Department continues to do outstanding work, and this latest Safe City ranking is testament to the officers on our streets every day, doing all they can to keep this one of the best communities in the country to raise a family and do business.”

In the 2010 City survey of more than 400 residents, 90 percent said they feel “safe” or “very safe” in Round Rock.

“We take our responsibilities seriously, but we could not achieve this success without a supportive community,” Police Chief Tim Ryle said. “We work closely with our residents, businesses, homeowners associations and neighboring law enforcement agencies. We also recognize the vital support we receive from the City Council and the rest of the city organization.”

This marks the seventh consecutive year Round Rock ranks among the top 30 safest cities in the country with a population of at least 75,000. In 2005, Round Rock ranked No. 8. In 2006 and 2007, Round Rock was No. 13 in the survey. In 2008, it was No. 19, and was up to No. 18 in 2009. Last year, it ranked No. 25.

The rankings include all cities of at least 75,000 residents that reported crime data to the FBI in the categories noted for calendar year 2010.
