About the Department
The Planning and Community Development Department works to improve the built environment and quality of life in Round Rock by establishing and implementing high standards for new development, and by encouraging maintenance, preservation and reinvestment in older parts of the city.
The Planning Department processes land development applications and provides analyses to the Planning & Zoning Commission and City Council to assist them in reviewing land development projects, standards and policies. We also provide data and analyses to promote economic development in the city. Our department helps to improve older parts of the City through historic preservation, enforcing property maintenance requirements and directing reinvestment to underserved areas.
Current Planning
The Current Planning Division administers land development procedures in Round Rock, including the Annexation, Zoning, Subdivision Platting and Site Development processes.
Subdivision Improvements and Building Permits are administered by the Engineering & Development Services Department.
Long-Range Planning
The Long-Range Planning Division guides the long-range growth of the city by means of the policies set forth in the General Plan and neighborhood plans. This division also provides research and analyses to assist the City Council and Planning & Zoning Commission in planning policy and economic development.
Historic Preservation
The Historic Preservation Division offers recommendations and incentives to preserve and maintain historically significant structures. It also works to promote historic tourism.
Geographic Information Systems
As of October 1, 2007, the GIS Division has moved to the Information Services Department. Office location and contact information is unaffected.
The GIS Division creates and maintains computer mapping systems and analyses for both the Planning & Community Development Department and other City departments. GIS data and services are very important to non-planning functions, including police, fire, emergency medical services, utilities, transportation and environmental analysis.
Community Development
The Office of Community Development distributes federal Community Development Block Grant funds to reinvest in underserved neighborhoods and populations.
Code Enforcement
The Code Enforcement Division ensures that properties are maintained in accordance with adopted nuisance codes, the Zoning Ordinance, and all other applicable City codes.
