Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 27th Annual Commemorative Walk & Celebration
The Black History Organization, with participation from the Round Rock Independent School District and support from the City of Round Rock is presenting the 27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday celebration from 1 to 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18.
The celebration includes a commemorative walk followed by a program at the Allen R Baca Center for Community Activities, 301 W. Bagdad Ave. The walk depends on the weather.
The commemorative walk begins at CD Fulkes Middle School, 300 W. Anderson Ave. Parade participants and marchers, following a drumline from Cedar Ridge High School will assemble at 1 p.m., and begin the march promptly at 1:30 p.m. The march will last approximately 15 minutes and will end at the Baca Center. The Round Rock High School ROTC Color Guard will lead the parade.
The activities will also include a drive for food donations. Donations will be collected at the Baca Center and will be taken to the Round Rock Serving Center.
A program with speakers and entertainment will be held at the Baca Center beginning at 2 p.m. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Hopewell Alumni and Mrs. Beulah Agnes Jones, both under the direction of Mr. Jimmie Jones, their music director. The program will also include performances by students the CD Fulkes Middle School Choir, and the Jackson Sisters of the Austin Area. The Voices of Worship from Sweet Home Baptist Church – The Pinnacle of Praise, will be featured.
The emcees will be City Councilmember Carlos Salinas, and Pastor Stuart Shelby, St. Richards Episcopal Church.The Speaker of the Occasion will be Brother John A. Mitchell, Ministering Evangelist of the Pecan Street Church of Christ, in Rockdale, Texas. The Guest Speaker will be the Rev. Billy Jackson, of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, in Georgetown, Texas. A reception will follow immediately after the program at approximately 3:30pm. The public is invited to participate by attending the walk, bringing non-perishable food for donation, bringing banners, and attending the program. Food donations will be taken to the Round Rock Service Center. Attendance is free of charge and all are welcome.
