City, County celebrate opening of new, 6-lane arterial

The City of Round Rock and Williamson County celebrated the opening of a new arterial road with a ceremonial ribbon cutting Wednesday, July 17.

Mayor Alan McGraw and Precinct 4 Commissioner Ron Morrison spoke at event, which marked the opening of a major north-south road that goes over Brushy Creek and under U.S. 79 and the Union Pacific Railroad near Dell Diamond and Old Settlers Park.

Kenney Fort Boulevard is a $25 million project that connects Forest Creek Boulevard to Joe DiMaggio Boulevard. The City of Round Rock contributed $17 million toward the project, with Williamson County providing $8 million in funds. CHASCO Contracting built the project, which was designed by HDR Engineering.

“This is another example of what collaboration between governments and private investors can do to bring a project to fruition,” Commissioner Morrison said.

Mayor McGraw gave a brief overview of the brief buy eventful history of the road’s namesake, historic Kenney Fort, site of two important events in early Texas history, the Archives War and Santa Fe Expedition.

"Not only does Kenny Fort Boulevard provide improved access to popular venues like Dell Diamond and Old Settlers Park, it should also renew interest in one of the more fascinating sites in early Texas history," McGraw said.
