City breaks ground on indoor sports facility

The City of Round Rock held a groundbreaking ceremony on an indoor sports facility Tuesday, Nov. 27.

The $14.5 million, 81,500 square foot facility, 2400 Chisholm Trail, will be large enough for six basketball courts or 12 volleyball courts and will provide new marketing opportunities for the City’s Sports Capitol of Texas tourism program. Last year, the tourism program generated $9.4 million in economic activity in Round Rock.

The indoor facility, which will open in December 2013, will be able to host events such as:

  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Darts
  • Gymnastics/Trampoline/Tumbling
  • Cheer/Dance/Baton/Twirling/Jump Rope
  • Horseshoe Pitching
  • Dodge Ball
  • Rock Climbing
  • Fencing
  • Powerlifting
  • Weightlifting
  • Martial Arts
  • Archery
  • Wrestling
  • Bocce Ball
  • National Table Tennis
  • Volleyball

Mayor Alan McGraw, City Manager Steve Norwood and Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Nancy Yawn spoke at the ceremony.

Round Rock voters approved an additional 2 percent to the City’s Hotel Occupancy Tax in a November 2011 election to pay for the facility.

Marmon Mok is designing the facility; Chasco is the contractor.
