The City of Round Rock began implementing new Flashing Yellow Left Arrow traffic signals on Tuesday, Nov. 13, along University Boulevard. The Flashing Yellow Signals will be implemented along with signal synchronization that we expect will reduce wait times by 30 percent on the University corridor.

The first locations are at University Boulevard’s intersections at Sunrise Road, Oakmont Drive and University Oaks.

The Flashing Yellow Left Arrow will allow drivers to turn left, after determining the turn is safe, during the period between the protected green arrow and the red light.

The changes will occur along other corridors throughout the City as signal timing plans are implemented and when traffic signal devices are replaced or installed.

The change is a result of a multi-year, multi-state study conducted for the Federal Highway Administration. The study showed this type of signal display provides a more intuitive message and eliminates driver confusion. This signal display became the national standard for allowing permitted left turns. The State of Texas adopted this standard in December of 2011.

• Less Congestion – Provides traffic engineers more options and flexibility in signal  timing plans
• More Consistent – Flashing yellow lights are now the U.S. standard and are increasingly being used in other states and cities
