Round Rock police are credited with saving the life of a man whose leg was severed in the course of a motorcycle collision Monday evening.

At about 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, Round Rock police responded to a report of a collision involving a motorist near the intersection of Buckboard Drive and the southbound IH 35 frontage road. Sgt. Nate Zoss was the first officer on scene and discovered the collision had severed the lower half of the motorcyclist’s leg.

With the assistance of Sgt. Tate Hunter and Officers Paul Hernandez and John Schultz, Zoss immediately applied a tourniquet to stop the victim’s bleeding. The victim was transported to St David’s Round Rock Medical Center by Williamson County EMS for treatment. 

The emergency room physician reported that Zoss’s decision to apply the tourniquet saved the life of the victim, who would otherwise have died prior to reaching the hospital.

Round Rock police officers are trained to administer basic first aid as part of their continuous training regimen.
