Who does what at the City

Individuals from each department honored for exemplary customer service in 2008.The City of Round Rock is divided into a number of departments that are responsible for different aspects of city government.

Administration
The Administration Department includes the City Council and the City Manager’s Office, as well as the City Secretary and Communication Division.

City Attorney
The City Attorney provides legal counsel to the City on a variety of issues.

Engineering and Development Services
The Engineering and Development Services Department overseas the development of the City’s infrastructure. The Department includes building inspection, construction inspection, development services and engineering.

Finance
The Finance Department manages all of the City’s financial activity. The Department produces the City’s annual operating budget.

Fire Department
The Fire Department provides emergency services to our population. Our Prevention Division works to educate citizens on personal and family safety. Our Rock Solid Safety Team works to get fire safety messages out to Round Rock children. The public can provide their contact information in our online emergency contact information system for emergency personnel to use should an emergency arise in their home or business

Human Resources Department
The Human Resources Department handles all hiring and staffing issues. It also includes the Safety and Risk Management Division.

Library
The Round Rock Public Library System provides the community with a variety of award-winning programs and services. Its extensive collection of books, DVDs, CDs and magazines is enhanced with an online catalog, remote access to more than 100 research databases, and adult education classes. For younger readers, the Library offers Story Time for all ages and the Summer Reading Program.

Municipal Court 
The Round Rock Municipal Court is the first level of the judicial branch of government and handles class C misdemeanors occurring in the territorial limits of the City of Round Rock.

Parks and Recreation
The Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department overseas the City’s extensive park system, the Clay Madsen Recreation Center, the Alan R. Bacca Center for Senior and Community Activitiesathletic and aquatic programs, after-school programs, urban forestry, brush recycling, and rental facilities. It also conducts numerous special events.

Planning and Community Development Department
The Planning and Community Development Department establishes the standards for new development and preservation of existing development. The Department works closely with the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Historical Preservation Commission. It also features prominently in the City’s Land Development Process.

Police Department
The Police Department is responsible for the provision of public safety as well as enforcement of federal, state and city laws and ordinances. Round Rock’s Police Department embraces a community-policing model. Our department also participates in community programs such as Operation Blue Santa, National Night Out, D.A.R.E. and Police Explorers. Our Animal Control Unit is responsible for pet and animal issues. The Department provides monthly Neighborhood Crime Reports that detail police activity for many Round Rock neighborhoods.

Purchasing Division
A division of the Finance Department, the Purchasing Division handles purchase requests throughout the City and conducts requests for proposals and requests for bids. Vendors are encouraged to register their firm online with our vendor database.

Transportation
The Transportation Department overseas the City’s transportation infrastructure, including streets, signs, traffic signals and City vehicles.

Utilities
The Utility Department provides reliable and safe drinking water to our customers. The Department also overseas the City’s Recycling Center, wastewater treatment plant, and water education and conservation programs.

Utility Billing
The Utility Billing Office, a division of the Finance Department, handles the billing for the City’s water, sewer and garbage services.
