Hi there. I would like to know what PARD has planned for the softball girls for the Fall '08 season. We have heard MANY rumors about the girls not having a place to play for the Fall season and we would like to know what the OFFICIAL word is - straight from the source.

There was another posting on the blog that said:

"The T-ball fields (Fields 1-4), and southwest fields (Fields 9-10) of the baseball complex are currently closed for construction. They are scheduled to re-open in June 2008. The remaining fields in the baseball complex will close for construction in September 2008 and are scheduled to re-open in February 2009. The girls softball complex will close in September 2008 to be renovated to baseball fields, and the new softball complex currently under construction will open in fall 2008."

Since construction did not begin until late January of this year on the girls softball complex, closing the current softball fields in September '08 leaves the girls with no place to play this Fall. What is PARD going to do for the girls?

In response to your questions posted on January 30, the City worked closely with all the baseball and softball leagues on the design of the Sports Complex Improvement Project.

We chose lighted batting cages for the project because the new locations of the batting cages are outside existing field lighting. We felt it was in our best interest to light those for night games and practices.

Through public input, there were complaints that T-ball games went too late into the evening for young children. We evaluated lights, but the additional cost was not justified due to the recommendation that T-ball games not extend into the evening.

The leagues raised the question about moving the fields back as well. The fields can only be moved back a maximum of 25 ft. due to utilities and easements. Since the existing girl's complex is converting to boys, we will have an adequate number of fields for each age group.

Why lighted batting cages? Why not put lights on the T-ball fields and move the fences back 50 feet. This would allow more teams to be able to play, especially during tournaments.
