Today I went up on a ladder 85 feet in the air to get some aerial shots of the Old Settlers Park Hall of Fame Softball Complex! Check out the pics at the city's flickr page.

Softball Fields Grand Opening set for Nov 8

The Girls Softball fields at Old Settlers Park are almost complete and we'll celebrate with the grand opening on November 8 in conjunction with the girls season opener. Join the City of Round Rock City Council, University of Texas Softball Coach Connie Clark, and representatives from Round Rock ISD and Girls Sertoma Softball for the celebration! Mark your calendar so you'll be one of the first to see the new complex! AWESOME!

Huge trees at Old Settlers Park

Round Rock Forestry began a massive planting at Old Settlers Park in conjunction with the Sports Complex Improvement Project last week. When the construction at Old Settlers baseball and softball complex is complete, there will be 500 trees in Old Settlers Park and the shade will make a world of difference. City Forester Emsud Horozovic said these are the largest trees the city has ever planted in Old Settlers Park. They are 4 inch Calipers and are 15-20 feet tall. To put the size in perspective, our crews and contractors have to use a backhoe to lift the large trees into place to plant them!

An assortment of Cedar Elm, Bur Oaks, Shumard, and Chinquapin Oak trees are part of the planting.

The trees are purchased with money from tree mitigation funds through the City of Round Rock tree ordinance. The city tree ordinance helps preserve existing protected-sized trees and provides funding to replace any trees that are removed from development projects. If trees can not be all replaced on site then tree mitigation can be paid to plant trees in city park and on other public land.
These trees will not only look nice, but they'll also provide shade at the complex. Its exciting to see these big trees become part of Old Settlers Park!

Ball Field Closure

Just to remind you, Old Settlers Park baseball and softball complex is officially closing July 21, 2008 for renovations. To make sure that we can finish the complex in a timely manner and keep the community safe, it was decided that closing the fields completely is the best way to make everything happen.

Field closure will allow for this two-year project to be a one-year project. The City is producing rapid results and we look forward to having a great complex. The park will reopen in phases. The new girls softball complex is under construction and set to open in November 2008. The baseball complex is expected to be complete in February for Spring ball 2009.

I cannot wait, there will be shading structures, bleachers, playgrounds, lights, and upgraded concession and restroom facilities. Not to mention great ball fields. The new complex is really going to build upon the Sports Capital of Texas image we are creating in Round Rock.

Sports Complex Updates

Good News for all you baseball fans. Old Settlers Park Sports Complex Improvement Project renovations are moving along quickly. The southwest complex parking lot has just been completed!!

In addition, the northwest complex will be complete by the middle of this month and the tennis restrooms will begin construction in mid-July.

I will continue to keep you updated on the progress of this project and as always, your comments are welcome.
