Movies in the Park, 5k, Concert Series and Lake Creek closing all happening this weekend

A lot is happening in Round Rock this weekend, so grab your planner and write this all down!

On Friday, August 14, Movies in the Park is playing Igor. The movie starts at dark, but all pre-movie activities start at 7:30 pm. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket. There will be vendors out there, but feel free to bring your own food. Get more information at www.roundrocktexas.gov/parksandrec under special events.

On Saturday, August 15, the 5k for Clay is happening at the Clay Madsen Recreation Center. If you haven’t sign up, it’s not too late. You can register the day of at the recreation center before the race. The 5k benefits the Clay Madsen Recreation Center and will be a fun run down the Greater Lake Creek Trail and A.W. Grimes. On Sunday, August 16, Texas Country music singer, Paul Eason will be playing at the Round Rock Amphitheatre for the 2009 Round Rock Summer Concert Series. Also, this is the last weekend that Lake Creek Pool will be open. The other pools will be open after this weekend, but if you’re a fan of Lake Creek this weekend will be your last chance to enjoy the pool! Get more information about pools and their closing dates at www.roundrocktexas.gov/pools.

Round Rock rocks lifeguard competition

Friday, July 10 two lifeguard teams, the RR Rockin’ River Rats and RR Krebs Creek, represented the City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation at the Central Texas Lifeguard Competition at the UT Swim Center. At the competition teams of lifeguards demonstrated their skills in the certain areas of first aid, CRP and water rescue techniques.

This competition gives the lifeguards a chance to prove the quality of their skills. They did a great job in this close competition where in some case they missed first place by only seconds.

The RR Rockin River Rats placed first in the scanning event, second in the backboard event and forth overall at the competition behind three teams from Schlitterbaun, which is a big accomplishment. The guards on the team are, Leah Anderson, Travis Luth, Ariel Maughan and Zach (Zorro) Rios.

The RR Krebs Creek team placed sixth overall at the competition. The lifeguards on the RR Krebs Creek team are, Luke Berhard, Amy Frame, Alex Herring and Shea Robinson.

Parks and Recreation is proud of the work the lifeguards did to prepare and preform in the competition! Their preformances in this compeition show that they all really know their stuff.

Micki Krebsbach pool will be closed until 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 11

Micki Kresback Pool will be closed until 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 11 due to the Dolphins’ Divisional Swim Meet. It’s a home meet for the Dolphins and an important one as well, so let’s give our support to them and hope they do great.

Want to get to the pool before 3 p.m? Don’t worry, our other two outdoor pools will be opening at normal time. Lake Creek will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. and Rock’N River will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Father’s Day weekend is upon us and it’s time to celebrate that special father figure in your life. Here are some activities to do with your dad this Father’s Day weekend.

Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20 take your dad out to the Juneteenth Rhythm and Ribs Celebration for barbeque, games, live music and entertainment. Eleven Fingered Charlie is playing at 3 pm. This weekend, June 5-7, the Super Series South Tx State Championship is going on here in Round Rock at Old Settlers Park. There will be recycling bins out there to promote being green, so look out for those.

After the fun of watching or playing in the Super Series take the quick trip to the Rock’N River Family Aquatic Center. After being in the heat, Rock’N River will be a great place to cool down.

Slam'n Jam'n idea for summer fun!

Are you looking for other summer fun? There are sports camps going on through out the summer for many different sports. Slam’n Jam’n basketball camp is June 8-12. Children 5-9 years-old go to camp from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and children 10-15 years-old go from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The camp is the Clay Madsen Recreation Center. The fee to participate is $79 for residents of the city. Non-residents can participate for $84.

Collegiate coaches will teach boys and girls the basic fundamentals of shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, offensive and defensive strategies. Participants are to wear comfortable gym clothes and tennis shoes. All Slam’n Jam’n participants will receive a T-shirt and basketball.

Summer swim lessons!

Looking for something to do this summer? Have fun in the sun while learning to swim with swim lessons by the City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation.

The City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation uses the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. Classes go from levels 1 to 5 and are also offered for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and adults. The infant, toddler and preschoolers classes last 25 minutes and all other classes last 50 minutes.

All swim lessons are held at the Lake Creek Municipal pool during the summer months. For more information and to register for swim lessons go to www.roundrockrecreation.com.

The Rock’N River Family Aquatic Center opened this past Memorial Day weekend and will be open again this weekend, May 30 and 31 from 12 to 6. Rock'N River open Memorial Day weekend

Looking for fun this Memorial Day weekend? The City of Round Rock’s outdoor pool, Rock’N River Family Aquatic Center is opening Memorial Day weekend from Friday, May 23 – Monday, May 25. The hours are 12-6p.m. Come out and stay cool while enjoying the lazy river, crazy slides, water playground, tunnel showers, water cannon, tipping frogs, floor geysers and zero beach entry play area.

Rock’N River is located in Old Settlers Park.

CMRC pool heating back up!

When the Clay Madsen Recreation Center pool boiler went out a few weeks ago, it meant some chilly swimming in the indoor pool and most swimmers opted to stay dry. Indoor swim lessons and aerobic classes were cancelled due to the water temperature in the upper 60's.

The good news is the boiler is now fixed and the temperature in the pool today is 72 degrees and water aerobic classes will resume on Monday, November 24. Thank you to everyone who had patience while we we waited to get the needed parts in and everything fixed!

Last Chance to Splash This Labor Day Weekend

So school has started and summer officially feels over, BUT Rock' N River and the Parks and Recreation Department want to give you a couple more days of summer fun by re-opening the Aquatics Center for the Labor Day weekend. This is the last chance to enjoy the Rock' N River until next year. The weather should be nice and hot so it will be a perfect way to cool off, relax and enjoy the long weekend!!

Rock' N River will be open Saturday, August 30 through Monday, September 1 from noon - 6 pm. Micki Krebsbach Pool and Lake Creek Pool will remain closed this weekend.

Rock' N River Closes Early August 18 to Welcome Fort Hood Families

As you know, we are helping to support a unit from Fort Hood and we want to be able to help the families as well as the fighting soldiers. The City of Round Rock has invited Fort Hood families and adopt-a-unit friends to come and have a fun evening in Round Rock. The City has decided to close the Rock' N River early Monday, August 18, at 4 pm to give the families a private experience at our great family aquatics center.

We want the families to feel comforted and supported as well, and being able to provide a great evening of fun and play is a nice way to show we care!

Rock' N River will re-open Tuesday, August 19, for regular business hours.

Pool Closures

The Round Rock summer season is coming to an end and pools will be closing within the next couple of weeks. It's sad, I know!

Lake Creek Pool will be the first to close on Sunday, August 17, Micki Krebsbach will close the following Sunday, August 24 and Rock' N River Family Aquatics Center will be the final pool to close on Monday, August 25.

Before you get too sad, Rock' N River will re-open one last time for the Labor Day weekend, Aug. 30- Sept. 1. Bring the kids and the family out to enjoy a refreshing and relaxing weekend!

So make sure to visit the pools before they close. Finalize those nearly perfect tans, cool off a couple more times and relax at your favorite pools.

I hope you have enjoyed your summer season, and the good news behind all this is that we are moving closer to cooler weather (slowly)!!

Rock' N River Closed Today

City of Round Rock's Rock'N River Family Aquatic Center (3300 E Palm Valley Blvd) is closed today, August 6 for maintenance. The pool will resume normal operating hours on Thursday, August 7 at 10 am.

Guests can still jump in one of our other city of Round Rock pools to stay cool. Lake Creek Pool (800 Deerfoot Drive) is open from 1 pm - 5 pm or Micki Krebsbach pool (301 Deepwood Drive) which is open from 1 pm - 8 pm. Round Rock Lifeguards Compete in the South Texas Lifeguard Competition

Congratulations to the Round Rock lifeguards for thier success in the 2008 South Texas Lifeguard Competition!

This was the second year that Round Rock has entered the competition. Round Rock entered the Rock’N River Donuts, Lake Creek Ligers, and Kresbach Rescuers. In order to prove their lifeguard skills, the Round Rock teams were put to the test with various events. Some of these events include: First Aid scenarios, Spinal Management, Water Resuscitation Rescue, Passive Victim Recover Relay and CPR for the Professional Rescuer Scenarios. Scenarios ranged from drowning and hypothermia victims, to head gashes and chemical burns. Using strict reviewing criteria, the teams were reviewed, ranked and placed.

Rock'N River medaled 5th in the Rescue Scenario!

The City is very proud their lifeguard's accomplishments and we look forward to their future success in next years' competition.
