The Sports Capital of Texas Ambassadors will be at Clay Madsen Recreation Center on Wednesday, July 22 from 12 to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. promoting the new Round to Rock fitness program.

Now I know what you’re thinking, “Who are these Ambassadors and what do they do?”
The Ambassadors are a group of Round Rock professionals and students created by Mayor Alan McGraw with the mission to engage the community in the “Sports Capital of Texas” brand and promote healthy living.

The new fitness program they are running does just that. The Sports Capital of Texas Ambassadors are looking for people who have fitness goals they are committed to reach. All you have to do is fill out an application for the Round to Rock program…and be willing to give up some of your time to sweat.

If you are selected then you get the chance of a life time to learn how to live a healthier life style through diet and exercise to reach your goal. You will get FREE fitness assessments, personal training and nutrition counseling. In return for the free training you will be featured on Channel 10 and a blog so the whole community can keep up with your progress and have the chance to get involved in other ways.

Being someone who used to work out with a personal trainer three times a week I know how expensive it can get. This is a great deal. I’m going to be jealous of the lucky people that get picked for this program.

Juneteenth is over and done, hope you didn't miss the fun

If you didn’t go to the Juneteenth Rhythm and Ribs Celebration you missed out. Although the heat was sweltering hot the atmosphere of the event was cool. There were moon walks, a rock wall, food vendors, games, contests, barbeque cook-off and entertainment.

I went to check out the action Saturday and had a great time. The Councilmembers declare Juneteenth officially the Juneteenth Rhythm and Ribs Celebration for Round Rock.

The One Way Baptist Church Choir came out singing to celebrate the announcement. The choir sounded great.

While setting up the stage for Eleven Fingered Charlie the DJ played classic dance tunes for the crowd to dance to. A few members of the Round Rock Police Department came out to show us their moves to the Electric Slide and the Cupid Shuffle.

I enjoyed the sounds of Eleven Fingered Charlie. There reggae/rock music was nice and relaxing in the heat of the day. After that, the rap group, Nikkage came on stage to end the night.

Over all it was a great day out at the Round Rock Amphitheater.

Father’s Day weekend is upon us and it’s time to celebrate that special father figure in your life. Here are some activities to do with your dad this Father’s Day weekend.

Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20 take your dad out to the Juneteenth Rhythm and Ribs Celebration for barbeque, games, live music and entertainment. Eleven Fingered Charlie is playing at 3 pm. Summer at Baca

The Baca Center for Senior and Community Activities has many things for you to do this summer. There are educational programs and seminars, exercise groups and organization for you to check out. Visit the website to see all you can be doing this summer.

One thing to check out is Tejano Time. It’s an informal dance get together that happens Thursdays from 1 to 3 pm in the aerobics room at the Baca Center. You can bring your own Tejano CD and join in the dancing or just watch.

Life Scout soars above and beyond for Round Rock in hopes of going Eagle

Life Scout, James Hall, organized a community service project where he and other volunteers planted 44 trees in the City of Round Rock’s Bowman Park on Friday, June 5.

Hall is completing the requirements to become an Eagle Scout. One of the requirements is to do a community service project that will benefit an organization other than the Boy Scouts. The community project is a way for the Scout to show leadership. James and his volunteers teamed up with the city's Parks and Recreation department to help serve the community.

Ten Yaupon Pride of Houston, ten Wax Myrtles, six Cedar Elms, five Arizona Cypress, five Live Oak, five Red Oak and three Burr Oak trees were planted to diversify the area and develop the park. The trees will help shade the nature trail and the play ground area, as well as, provide privacy for the homes near the park.

Thanks James and all the other volunteers who came to help. Your service is just one way that Round Rock Parks and Recreation stays beautiful.

Go to the Super Series and after go to get super soaked

This weekend, June 5-7, the Super Series South Tx State Championship is going on here in Round Rock at Old Settlers Park. There will be recycling bins out there to promote being green, so look out for those.

After the fun of watching or playing in the Super Series take the quick trip to the Rock’N River Family Aquatic Center. After being in the heat, Rock’N River will be a great place to cool down.

Parade your float this July 4

With July 4Frontier Days about a month away it is time for you to start thinking about the parade. If you just want to come out and watch, great. You can find out the parade route on the city’s website and decide where you want to set up your lawn chair.

If you are interested in being in the parade, awesome! There is no cost to participate in the parade, so grab a trailer and your friends, decorate your float or your bike and be a part of the fun. No entry is too large or too small. After the parade is over you can watch the parade and see your float on Channel 10 after the event. This is can be a great chance to show the community what your company, organization, club or family is all about.

Entries in the parade have the chance to win the title and bragging rights of being the best in these categories: best marching unit, best commercial unit, best riding unit, most beautiful, best related to theme, best civic and most spirited unit and best overall.

So get to work on your parade float! To enter in the parade you must fill out an application. Applications can be found online along with details about the parade and Frontier Days at www.roundrockfrontierdays.com.

Slam'n Jam'n idea for summer fun!

Are you looking for other summer fun? There are sports camps going on through out the summer for many different sports. Slam’n Jam’n basketball camp is June 8-12. Children 5-9 years-old go to camp from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and children 10-15 years-old go from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The camp is the Clay Madsen Recreation Center. The fee to participate is $79 for residents of the city. Non-residents can participate for $84.

Collegiate coaches will teach boys and girls the basic fundamentals of shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, offensive and defensive strategies. Participants are to wear comfortable gym clothes and tennis shoes. All Slam’n Jam’n participants will receive a T-shirt and basketball.

Summer swim lessons!

Looking for something to do this summer? Have fun in the sun while learning to swim with swim lessons by the City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation.

The City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation uses the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. Classes go from levels 1 to 5 and are also offered for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and adults. The infant, toddler and preschoolers classes last 25 minutes and all other classes last 50 minutes.

All swim lessons are held at the Lake Creek Municipal pool during the summer months. For more information and to register for swim lessons go to www.roundrockrecreation.com.

The Rock’N River Family Aquatic Center opened this past Memorial Day weekend and will be open again this weekend, May 30 and 31 from 12 to 6. The Boat Regatta is still alfoat for July 4

The Round Rock the Boat Regatta is still on! It is on July 4 from 2-4 p.m. as part of the festivities for July 4 Frontier Days Celebration. Pits for the Boat Regatta will open at 1 p.m. There will be one round of time trails and the top three times will go in a head to head race to see who wins the title of “Fast and Furious.”

We are also inviting all those participating in the Boat Regatta to enter their boat in the Frontier Days parade to show off their fantastic boats. If you would like to enter your boat in the parade visit www.roundrockfrontierdays.com for more information or to get the parade float application.

Rock'N River open Memorial Day weekend

Looking for fun this Memorial Day weekend? The City of Round Rock’s outdoor pool, Rock’N River Family Aquatic Center is opening Memorial Day weekend from Friday, May 23 – Monday, May 25. The hours are 12-6p.m. Come out and stay cool while enjoying the lazy river, crazy slides, water playground, tunnel showers, water cannon, tipping frogs, floor geysers and zero beach entry play area.

Rock’N River is located in Old Settlers Park.

Last Chance to Splash This Labor Day Weekend

So school has started and summer officially feels over, BUT Rock' N River and the Parks and Recreation Department want to give you a couple more days of summer fun by re-opening the Aquatics Center for the Labor Day weekend. This is the last chance to enjoy the Rock' N River until next year. The weather should be nice and hot so it will be a perfect way to cool off, relax and enjoy the long weekend!!

Rock' N River will be open Saturday, August 30 through Monday, September 1 from noon - 6 pm. Micki Krebsbach Pool and Lake Creek Pool will remain closed this weekend.

Register Online for the Outlaw Trail 100 Cycling Tour

Online registration has begun for the Outlaw Trail 100 Cycling Tour. The tour takes place Saturday, October 18. You can choose between a 10 mi, 25 mi, 50 mi, 100K or 100 mile tour and you receive a bunch of free stuff for participating (shirt, water bottle, keychain, Clif bars).

This is a great opportunity to get out and ride your bike on an established path. It might just be me, but I feel like I have seen more cyclists this summer than ever before. If you are a new cyclists and just getting into the sport that sign up for the 10 mile race!! It's going to be a lot of fun and it's a good way to meet other cyclists and get more involved in riding.

I just recently got a bicycle, and I was so excited to be able to ride my bike places instead of driving to save on gas. I did that maybe twice before realizing that it takes me three as long and I get four times as sweaty. So I have not really used my bike that much this summer, but I am thinking about entering us up in the 10 mile race. You can look for me on a 1980's black and white speckled Huffy!!

People and Parks Fund

The People and Parks Fund is a giving circle that citizens are able to join. By making a donation to the fund, you automatically become a member of the foundation and are given the opportunity to vote on what park projects you would like enacted. All projects will be submitted by the Parks and Recreation Department and from there, members will vote on which projects they want to see take place. This is a great way to ensure that your money goes right into the parks of Round Rock.

If you want to become a member you must donate before September 30, 2008 to be able to vote on this years' projects.

Donations:
$10 per child
$15 per individual
$30 per family (Donations are being accepted through September 30, 2008)
