We were crossing fingers the rain would go away but it only got worse. The Round Rock the Boat Regatta is now cancelled due to heavy rains and thunderstorms at the park. Since the weather forecast doesn't show signs that it will pass through, the City of Round Rock cancelled today's event. www.roundrocktexas.gov/rocktheboat
We had a great time this morning showing off the Top Gun boat from the City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation to showcase the Round Rock the Boat Regatta on the Fox 7 morning show. We also helped make Nik a temporary boat to try out on the water. Let me emphasize "temporary" as I think it worked for about 30 seconds! Check it out at http://www.myfoxaustin.com/dpp/good_day/051509_cardboard_boat_races and plan to be there Saturday at Old Settlers Park to watch the races at noon!
Your Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department has a full weekend of free, family fun planned for you!
Saturday the Round Rock the Boat Regatta has cardboard boat races beginning at noon. We already have 32 boats registered. Last year we had 16 boats and a large crowd so this year will be huge! The boat regatta is part of a full weekend of activites. On Sunday the Concert Series kicks off with live music from "Pictures of Then." Free family fun. check out www.roundrocktexas.gov/concerts for more details on the concerts and www.roundrocktexas.gov/rocktheboat for the regatta!
Ok.. this is an early heads up, but the lineup is too good for me not to tell you about it in advance on the blog. Round Rock's free concert series features "Pictures of Then" at the Round Rock Amphitheater on Sunday, May 17. The goal of Round Rock's Concert Series is to highlight up and coming artists from the local music scene and provide a great leisure opportunity for families. Two hours of great music starting at 7 pm and its free! Mark your calendar now! www.roundrocktexas.gov/concerts.
Past artists in the series include Los Lonely Boys, WideAwake, the Jon Barry Project, Aaron Watson, Rick Trevino, and Guy Forsyth. We know how to pick 'em! 2009 Schedule: May 17 at 7 pm Pictures of Then
June 20 at 3 pm – Eleven Fingered Charlie *in conjunction with the Juneteenth Celebration July 19 at 7 pm – Marshall Ford Swing BandAugust 16 at 7 pm – Paul EasonSeptember 20 at 7 pm – Drew Smith's Lonely Choir Pictures of Then Bio- City Beat magazine praises Minneapolis-based Pictures of Then as having "a sonic balance between reverence for the past and vision of the future." Their sound is fresh enough to appeal to even the most discerning of indie-rock fans while still containing essential ingredients to have the masses "reaching for the repeat button just as soon as it ends." (MyxerTones.com) Their music has been featured on MTV's The Real World and The Hills and was licensed by other programs on USA, Oxygen and Lifetime. In 2008, they appeared on the MTV "Choose or Lose Tour." The band has also appeared alongside such renowned acts as Green Day, Interpol, and Motion City Soundtrack on multiple compilation albums. With their ever-growing fan base and the rising anticipation of their 2009 release, "Pictures of Then and The Wicked Sea," it is only a matter of time before this band, firmly rooted in indie soil, becomes one of the few independents to branch out into mainstream.
It's down to the wire. May 11 is the deadline to register for the Round Rock the Boat Regatta on May 16 at Old Settlers Park. We already have more than 15 individual teams registered and anticipate many more to come in the next week! The event was a lot of fun last year as I got to watch people sink, swim and swim with their boats in tow.
The City hosted three boat building schools this year so hopefully you know how to make a boat that actually will stay afloat! Come out and enjoy the fun whether you built a boat or not. There will be concessionaires, kite flying, the giant Joanne Land playground and the fun as you watch kids and adults attempt to float across the lake. Check out the video from last year at www.roundrocktexas.gov/rocktheboat.
Rain, rain go away come again another day!!! While we love to get rain in Round Rock, it delayed some of the concrete pouring and maintenance work at the Round Rock Skatepark and therefore, the skate park closure is now extended. The skatepark will reopen Thursday, May 7.
