May Maddness

We have a crazy, busy month ahead for May, and it's going to be lots of FUN! First of all we have Early Release Gaming on May 2, in the Teen Room from 2:00pm-3:30pm.

Then on May 12th, in the Gallery Area, from 10:00am-3:00pm we have Mother's Day Knitting & Crochet Time. Teens and adults are welcome to join us and either make a surprise gift for Mother's Day or bring your mother and learn how to make a simple coaster together. Bring your own projects too! There will be supplies for early arrivals. At 11:30am & 2:00pm there will be a Spinning Demonstration showing how yarn is made. Refreshements will be avialable too.

Book club is on May 15th, 6:30pm-7:30pm in the Teen Room and we will discuss City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. Stay after book club for TAB and hear about our plans for the summer.

Finally we have the Cardboard Boat Regatta on May 19th in Old Settlers Park, with TAB members crewing last year's boat which they have adapted for this race. The races start at 12:00pm, so be there, cheer on the Library boat and have fun!

All Ready For April?

The first few months of the year have gone so fast! Make the most of April by joining in the fun programs we have planned.

Book club is on the 3rd Tuesday of the month as usual and that is on April 17th, in the Teen Room. We'll be discussing The Ruins of Gorlan (Ranger's Aprrentice # 1). Take a look to here to learn about the best selling series. Following book club TAB (Teen Advisory Board) will meet to plan future Teen programs. Join us and give your iput! One question Miss Jane will be asking is, "What new Gaming equipment should we consider buying?"

On April 24th, Almer Joers from Randolph Brooks FCU will be giving you the opportunity to attend a fun class learning about Savings and Investments, in Meeting Room A, 5:00pm-6:00pm There will be door prizes and also pizza/refreshments served @ 6pm. Join us, learn some cool stuff, and amaze your friends and family with what you learn that will help your financial planning in coming years.

Finally we have a fun, fun, fun program at the end of the month, with a Doctor Who Party! We'll be in Meeting Room C, April 28th from 1:00pm-4:00pm. We'll have a Doctor Who trivia quiz, Doctor Who themed food, Doctor Who Photo op and Doctor Who games. Did I mention this is a Doctor who Party? Dress as your favorite character if you would like to, or in Doctor Who blue.

Anything Happening in March?

Yes of course something is happening! March 23rd is the release date for the much anticipated movie The Hunger Games. Teen Book Club will meet 3 days before the movie release, and we will be talking about the book and the movie! We will have pizza, refreshments and a door prize of a movie gift certificate (so that you can go and see the movie!). Where? Teen Room @ Round Rock Pulic Library When? March 20th, 6:30 onwards Who? Any teens aged 12-18. Be there and join in the fun and excitement.

Anything else happening? Yes! We have Early Release Gaming on March 7, in the Teen Room, 2:00pm-3:30pm. Have fun after school with the Wii, Gamecube and Playstation 2.

Are there any programs you'd like to see us doing? We'd love to hear your suggestions.

Fun Filled February Ahead for Teens

We have lots happening in February that teens will want to join in with. To kick off we have Early Release Gaming on February 1st from 2:00pm-3:30pm in the Teen Room. We will have Wii and Gamecube games available. See you there!

On February 18th, we have a Post Valentine's Chocolate Party - EAT YOUR HEART OUT! There will be no hearts, no roses; just half price candy that no one bought for you! We will watch a fun chocolate themed movie @12:30pm, have a trivia quiz and other chocolate games. There will be an optional chocolate cookie exchange. And of course we will have refreshments to wash down the candy! Find us in meeting room C from 12:00pm-3:00pm.

At Book Club on February 21st, author Jennifer Ziegler will be there to talk about her new top selling novel Sass and Serendipity, and of course you can get her autograph too!

Winter Reading

Activities are fairly quiet this month but the library is still a good place to find some warmth. Teen Book Club will be hosting one of our favorite authors on the 20th. April Lurie will be stopping by to discuss her book The Less-Dead. Please join us!! Teen Book Club is followed by the Teen Advisory Board (TAB). These discussion are open to everyone and help form future events.

Some other recommended reads for your Winter vacation are April Lurie's Brothers, Boyfriends and Other Criminal Minds. Divergent by Veronica Roth is very popular. Jane has ordered more copies of The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Also on order is the newest book in The Tiger's Curse series: Tiger's Voyage by Colleen Houck, Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi and The Future of Us by Jay Asher. They will be available soon!

The Round Rock Public Library has recently introduced BookMyne. This is an app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch with busy library users in mind. An Android version is scheduled to be released later this year. With this app you can search the library's catalog or even scan a barcode on the book cover, then search for it in the library. A few clicks later you can put the books on hold or check your account, even renew checked-out books. You can browse best-sellers and lists of award-winners. This app will also allow families to switch between multiple library accounts. Simple to use. Just go to the App Store and download the free app, BookMyne!

The library will be closed the 24th, 25th and 26th in observance of the Christmas holiday!

Writing Read Aloud for Teens

As I stated in the last blog, November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). A nonprofit literary crusade to encourage aspiring novelists to write a 50,000 word novel in a month. The event is to promote creativity and adventure, not necessarily expecting great literary works, but quite a number of them have been published. Here at the library, we believe all writing is good writing. It is about the creative outlet and exploring your imagination. You may not have time to write a novel but enjoy creating a poem or short story. November 29th, we will be sharing our writing. Bring a piece of your work and a friend. Then you can share your story, a chapter or a poem! Don't worry, this is for fun! We are not judging the writing, just supporting and inspiring fellow writers. At 6pm, we will munch on pizza to start the event.

Also in November, we will be having National Gaming Day @ the Library on the 12th. Teen Book Club and TAB meet the evening of the 15th in the Teen Room. The 16+ Book Club will meet on November 22nd at 7:30pm. The 16+ Book Club is for older teens and adults, so join the fun!!

Create Some Fall Fun!!

We are encouraging you to use your imagination this fall. Halloween is just around the corner. We will be hosting the annual Teen Halloween Party. One of our very creative teens is helping Ms Jane with activities. They are planning a Costume Competition, Monster Trivia, Scary Storytelling, a Cauldron Toss and more. There will be pizza and refreshments served but supplies are limited, so arrive early! Please use the Sheppard Street entrance on October 28th starting at 6pm, ending around 8pm. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

11-12-11 National Gaming Day @ your library: We are one of thousands of libraries participating. There will be games and activities in the library for families to enjoy. It begins at 11am and will continue until 4pm. We will have meeting room C reserved especially for our Teens beginning at 2pm. There will be Open Gaming and board games available. Stop in and have fun!!

October starts quiet but ends with a party!!

The week of September 25th - October 1st is Banned Book Week. Some popular teen books are on the 10 Most Challenged List. These include Twilight, The Hunger Games, Lush, What My Mother Doesn't Know, and Crank! A couple of my favorite series hit the Most Challenged Books of the Decade list, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman and, of course, Harry Potter by J K Rowling. For more information check out our display at the library or the ALA Banned Book Week Web site.

October 18th, the Teen Book Club will meet to discuss Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan. The TAB meeting will follow. On October 25th, the 16+ Book Club will meet. Early Release Gaming will be held in the Teen Room from 2pm until 3:30pm on October 26th!

Prepare now for the Halloween Party!! We will be having a Costume Competition, Scary Storytelling and Monster Trivia. We will be serving pizza and refreshments for the first arrivals. This event will be held October 28th from 6pm until 8pm. Please enter through the Sheppard Street entrance, as this will be an after hours event.

We are also looking forward to National Gaming Day on November 12th. There will be games in the gallery area from 1am until 4pm. The Teen Open Gaming will be from 2pm until 4pm in the meeting rooms. Tween Open Gaming will be from 11am until 1pm. More information about National Gaming Day on the next blog!

The summer comes to an end, but the fun continues!

The summer comes to an end, but the fun continues! Throughout the school year we will have Teen Book Club, the 16+ Book Club for older teens and adults, Teen Advisory Board (TAB) and Early Release Gaming days.

The next 16+ Book Club meets at 7:30 August 25th. We will be discussing Black and White by Malorie Blackman. Copies of the next book, Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane will be handed out on August 25th and discussed September 22nd. If you miss the August book club and would like to attend September, please contact Librarian Jane Dance for more information.

We are very excited to welcome author Tracy Deebs to our Teen Book Club September 20th, 6:30-7:30. She will be discussing her new book Tempest Rising. Jane has just a couple copies left, so if you are interested please stop in soon!! All reports indicate this is an excellent book. I am looking forward to reading it myself!

Jane and I are pleased to continue the Early Release Gaming days. The first day will be September 14th from 2-3:30 in the Teen Room. We will have the Wii and the Playstation 2 set up, as well as the good old GameCubes! We are always open to suggestions if you have a favorite game. Speaking of suggestions, the TAB group meets September 20th. They help Ms Jane plan teen events. New members are aways welcome.

Further events in the works, include the Teen Halloween Party, planned for the October 28th. More details to follow in the next blog!

The End of Global Adventures

Going Global, Staying Connected has brought many fun adventures. Murder Mystery was a big success last week, thanks to the hard work and dramatic talents of Ms Jane, David Sharp and all our fabulous teens! We have had a wide range of events this summer; everything from Open Gaming to Zumba!

This week we will be hosting A Taste of India. Indian snacks and refreshments will be served while we learn a little Belly Dancing and how to wrap a Sari. We will also get Henna Tattoos! Last year, my Henna Butterfly turned out beautiful and lasted for days!! It seems like a perfect end to the summer. Please remember to turn in the last of your reading logs and drawing slips by August 8th. Remember - we have some excellent prizes to give away, such as a NOOK and a Membership to Crazy Skates!

At the August Teen Book Club, we will discuss Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman. Please feel free to come by and visit with us!

Teen Murder Mystery Party

RRPL's very own David Sharp wrote this year's Murder Mystery, 'Til Debt Do Us Part. This annual event is always a good time. Participants can audition for a part in the story or be detectives and solve the crime. Since this year's setting is a wedding and reception, finger food and refreshments will be served. Of course, as part of the Going Global, Staying Connected, participants will be entered into the end of summer prize drawing. Please join us Tuesday, July 26th at 6pm for a little dark humor and murder...

"It's the wedding of the year as multi-millionaire Phoebe Webb goes down the aisle for the sixth time. She's marrying Hollywood Stuntman Darren DeVille, himself extremely wealthy from his family's steel company. However, all is not well in the house of DeVille, and Darren may need his family's patented steely nerves to survive the web of Phoebe, and this wedding might turn out to be a funeral. I mean, it... it will turn out to be a funeral, because the event is called a Murder Mystery Party. It would be very silly to call it that if there were not a murder somehow involved. Actually, it's kind of silly the way these descriptions act all cryptic as if you didn't already know that a Murder Party is going to involve some kind of death with malice and forethought. Anyway, I hope that doesn't deter you from coming to Phoebe and Darren's wedding and reception. Might as well eat the cake. It's paid for and all, so it'd be a shame to let it all go to waste." - David Sharp

TEEN TUESDAY: PIZZA and a MOVIE!

Tuesday, July 5th we will be having our Going Global movie night. Copyright Licensing does not allow me to state exactly which movie this will be, but let's just say we will be watching Part 1 and Part 2 will be in theaters soon! We will be serving pizza and refreshments. All teen Muggles and Wizards are invited, so bring a comfy cushion or chair. We will be giving a door prize of a Movie Theater Gift Certificate! As with all of the Summer Reading Programs, the teens will be able to enter for the end of summer drawing. Prizes include more gift certificates, a VIP membership to Crazy Skates, and a NOOK. Pizza will be served beginning around 5:30. See you in Meeting Room A Tuesday night!

On Tuesday July 12th, we will celebrate our favorite British Librarian's Birthday! Meeting Room A will again hold our gathering including pizza, refreshments and, of course, cake. We will be also playing board games. No, presents are not expected. Please remember to fill out your drawing slip for the Teen prizes. If you do not know Ms Jane, this is a great time to come in and meet her!

Last week we had a great time at the Zumba / Yoga night. We are planning to have more classes in the future. Guys - these classes are fun for you too! We only had one brave male last week. He had a room full of girls all to himself!

Further into July, Teen Tuesday will include the Teen Book Club and the always popular Murder Mystery!

Fun has officially started

Teen Tuesday started this week with some Open Gaming fun! Next week we will have the Teen Book Club at Friar Tucks Pantry. We will serve tea and biscuits (cookies). Newcomers are always welcome. We will be discussing Gone by Michael Grant. On June 28th, we will be having a healthy night with Zumba and Yoga. This is not a girls only event.

Remember at each Summer Reading Program you will receive a drawing slip for prizes. Ms Jane has many excellent prizes to give away. Just in....Crazy Skates will be opening soon in Round Rock. They will have 2 roller rinks, laser tag and a video arcade. They have donated a one year Crazy Skates membership!

Please stop by and pick up a reading log. Join all the summer fun in the cool retreat of your local library!

Summer Begins...

Next week will be very busy at the Round Rock Library. Monday and Tuesday, we will have training for our SRP teen volunteers. We officially kick off our Summer Reading Program on Wednesday, June 8th. Please stop by the table and pick up your reading log for Going Global, Staying Connected. Remember the teens will be entered in a drawing for a NOOK! Our first event for the teens will be Open Gaming on June 14th. We would appreciate suggestions on games you would like to see as we expand our collection.

Round Rock Public Library Teens now have their own Facebook page. Please check it out, join and participate in conversations. Ms Jane and I are always open to new ideas. We want to know what you liked and do not like.

GOING GLOBAL, STAYING CONNECTED!

This year’s Teen Summer Reading Program is Going Global, Staying Connected. Jane has packed the summer with many entertaining programs that will travel the world. Reading logs begin June 8^th and will continue thru August 8^th. Drawing slips for a NOOK will be given for reading logs and for attending programs. Programs begin June 14^th with Open Gaming. July 5^th we will be watching a Movie. This movie will have part 2 released in theaters July 15^th so we will have a door prize of a movie gift certificate. (Guess the movie?) We will also serve pizza and refreshments. Please join me in celebrating Jane’s birthday July 12^th. Again we will serve cake and pizza. Jane will be 21 (again)! The Teen Murder Mystery is back by popular demand on July 26^th with a global twist. We will also have yoga, zumba, henna tattoos and belly dancing.I would like to give a big THANKS to all the teens that have helped with the SRP prep work. No one knows better than I how much fun stamping and stapling can be!We have two teen book clubs now and the ongoing TAB group. We would love to hear your ideas or comments.
